When a dog is abandoned by its owner, it is always distressing, especially when they are found to be in such poor condition. Thankfully, there are kind-hearted individuals willing to step up and give these vulnerable animals a second chance.
This was the case recently with a pit bull that had been left in a dire state. However, Maggie is now on the road to recovery.
Maggie, a pit bull, was brought to the Orange County Animal Shelter in Virginia on July 29. A concerned citizen discovered her, as reported by WVIR. She was severely underweight, weighing only 27 pounds—less than half of what would be considered a healthy weight.

Gina Jenkins, the director of the shelter, shared with WVIR that Maggie “was barely alive, couldn’t move, couldn’t stand, couldn’t walk.”
She revealed that the dog had demodectic mange, conjunctivitis, and was also dehydrated and lethargic.
Despite the severity of the animal’s mistreatment, Jenkins expressed doubts about the owner being identified. Instead, their focus is on showering Maggie with the love and care she has been denied: “No one will come forward. She’ll be our top priority.”

Maggie is currently under the care of dedicated professionals and is on the path to recovery, although the journey ahead is challenging due to her health condition. It is estimated that her recovery will take at least 3 to 4 months, and there’s a possibility that her hair may never fully regrow.
Nonetheless, everyone involved is resolute about providing this dog with the much-needed second chance. Maggie’s story resonated with her online supporters, who generously contributed thousands of dollars for her care, reaching their fundraising goal in just one day.
Though she still has a long road ahead, the shelter shared on Facebook that Maggie’s condition is gradually improving. They assured everyone that they will provide updates on her progress.
Despite the significant hurdles, Maggie’s demeanor has shown improvement. She is becoming more settled and is starting to enjoy food and blankets, which is a stark contrast to the cruelty and neglect she endured.
In fact, she is now 100% better. Jenkins shared with WVIR, “It’s incredible to see the transformative effects that love, care, and proper nourishment can have on an animal. She loves her blankets and finds comfort snuggling under them.”
Maggie’s abandonment in such a condition is truly heartbreaking, but we find solace in the fact that she is now in a safe environment and on the path to recovery.
Please help spread this story and send your well wishes to Maggie.
