German shepherd and owl on his back

Watching two wildly different species become friends is always special. Interspecies relationships are wonderful to witness and prove that despite our differences, we can all get along.

Nothing proves the point more than this cute owl that is friends with a German Shepherd. Not only are the two friends, the owl even trusts the dog with its life, as you’ll see in this heartwarming video.

The German shepherd takes the adorable tiny owl swimming! The little owl rides on the back of his doggy friend, standing on her pink life jacket. In the water, the owl is totally vulnerable to the dog yet trusts her to keep him safe.

As a German Shepherd, the dog takes her job and loyal guardian seriously as she swims with the owl on her back. She’s obviously aware that she has a feathered passenger and carefully paddles through the water.

The two seem to really enjoy their swim and the entire scene is not only adorable but very peaceful, too. The scenery is beautiful and the perfect place for a swim with friends. There is even another dog friend joining them.

Owls are not water birds but they can swim if they need to so there are no worries should the owl slide off the dog’s back. However, even though the owl can tread water, she cannot ascend from the water and would have trouble reaching the land so that’s where the trust in her dog friend is really apparent.

According to ornithologist Matthew Zwiernik, at the Audubon Society, Michigan State University:

“While owls can swim through water, they rarely do by choice… Owls aren’t able to ascend from the water until they reach land, and their large talons don’t propel them through the water quickly.”

So, it’s obvious this feathered and furry friendship is based on trust despite their not being of the same species. It’s truly amazing to see how special their relationship is despite their vast differences.

We hope you enjoy the video and share it with all your friends.
